The dorms at Cornell have varying degrees of quality for its networking equipment. The older dorms usually have slower connections. This article shows which places on campus have what types of connections.

10 Megabit

This provides a maximum transfer rate of 1.12 MiB/s, since there are 8 bits per byte. If your dorm is not listed anywhere, it is probably in this category.

100 Megabit

Gigabit (1000 Megabit)

The cables Cornell provides do not support gigabit speeds, so if you do not bring your own cable, these will run at 100 megabit. Also, since the backbones between buildings are gigabit and you have to share bandwidth, you will not see full speeds unless you are transferring between people on the same subnet.
